My Four Biggest Mistakes of Big Brother 14

As I finish watching the final episodes of Big Brother 14 for the first time, I created a list of my biggest mistakes or things I could have done better throughout the season.

I can honestly say I have never played the “what-if” game when reflecting back on the season.

For the sake of my sanity,  and because I truly feel there is nothing I could have done different to affect the final outcome, I have been able to watch this season and enjoy it without any feelings of regret.

With that being said, I didn’t win Big Brother 14 by a 7-0 vote, so clearly I made some mistakes.  Lets take a look at the Top 4:

#4 – Smoothie Conversation

Big Brother 14 – Episode 24 – iTunes Aff Link

Wow! I pride myself on keeping blindsides secret while playing the game and all it took was a little smoothie action to distract me. In the game I got so used to placating to people it became like second nature to me.  Sometimes I just set it on auto-pilot.

Usually there’s no problem for me to do this, but I really wanted that smoothie. Clearly while watching this again, the smoothie was a lot higher priority than re-assuring Frank for the 100th time that he wasn’t getting evicted.

Right when I let the Joe-bomb slip I didn’t think much of it until I saw Frank’s reaction. Opposed to freaking out then and there and reassuring him he wasn’t getting evicted, I did my best to play it off and not put Frank into full panic mode (because I was after slipping!).

This conversation led to an immediate Diary Room session for the both of us and I could tell it became an instant story line. Sometimes slip-ups matter big time in this game, lucky for me, it didn’t really cost me anything except a day of paranoia.

#3 – Coaching Kara Not To Talk To Willie

Advising Kara not to talk to Willie before nominations was one of the biggest mistakes I made in the game. At the time I was trying to have  my team downplay anything to do with game-talk.

There was a target on their backs from the start because they were on my team, so my goal was to coach them to become docile players in the game.

This back fired on Kara because it didn’t give her any chance to get in Willie’s good graces (if there was such a thing). Watching the episode when Kara walked out the door was tough to watch because ultimately I felt responsible for her. As a coach I felt like I let her down, so naturally I wanted to make it up to her. After the show, I bought Kara lunch at In and Out and we called it even. ;)

#2 – Jury Miscalculation

Big Brother 14 – Episode 28 – iTunes Aff Link

This one was pretty obvious, but after I saw Episode 28, I was a little shocked. Seeing this clip really gave me a feel for how bitter people were. Up until seeing this clip I had a general idea, but I never knew it ran that deep!

Did I expect the jurors to be mad?

Of course.

Did I think the jurors would “get it” once it came time to vote?

Yes, I really did. Miscalculation city on my part.

Can I blame them?

No. Ultimately jurors can vote for whoever they want for whatever reason they want. It’s the job of the player to know what makes each juror tick. Apparently I just knew how to tick them all off. ;)

#1 – Not Extending This Conversation

Big Brother 14 – Episode 24 – iTunes Aff Link

Out of every mistake I made in the Big Brother house, none is bigger than this one. If I had a little more foresight in the moment, I wouldn’t have to lose sleep every night over missing this golden(eyes) opportunity for a comedy segment.

INSTANTLY after this went down, questions of regret swirled in my head:

Why didn’t I extend this conversation and act like I was Shane?!?

How long could I have carried on this fake conversation?!?

Having a conversation in the Big Brother house where someone THINKS you are someone else never happens. It is like getting struck by lightning while winning the lottery and finding a four-leaf clover all simultaneously.  It just doesn’t happen! Because of this, not playing into the Joe-Wassup conversation  is my all time biggest regret in Big Brother 14. ;)

It would have been amazing to see you go along with the Joe conversation! That was probably my favourite moment from the season because it was just so unbelievable!

Dan, you are awesome and I love that you write these posts! Thanks :)

    • Dan Gheesling

Jess – I know I couldn’t believe it happened. After it went down I tried to fall asleep but I kept asking myself, “did this really just happen?” :)

      • Sharte

Just courious what you think Joe would have said that you didn’t already know??
-miss watching the best reality player ever on tv!!

        • Dan Gheesling

I don’t think he would have said much game-wise, but it would have been hilarious to call him out on it. ;)

  • Julia

During that joe conversation I was like oh he should of kept that going… Love the blog!

  • LaLa

Your big mistakes IMO were Danielle and Janelle. Janie would have been loyal to you if given a chance, and Danielle was a horrible mess. Also, aligning with Boogie? Made you look like a starry eyed player, who NEVER had your back. Janelle would have fought for you tooth and nail.

    • Dan Gheesling

Good assessment LaLa, can’t say I disagree. Janelle was a boss! Would have liked to work with her long term. :)

      • BB PRNCSS

Amen. Janelle Is A Loyal Friend/Player And Was Not The Liar In The Game. Someone Else Was. I Think We Know Who! ;) LaLa You Said It Perfect!!! Blessings To You All!!!

    • Mike

I actually thought that alligning with Boogie and Frank would have worked out. It appeared they would have kept the silent 6 deal. Then you could have worked to get Frank out in sixth place, working a final two deal with Boogie; the only player the bitter jury would choose you over.

  • maria

That was sooooooo funny.. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I would have done exactly what you did in that situation, including regretting it..

    • Dan Gheesling

      I couldn’t believe it either!

  • Sammi

I think you played a great game.. Nothing is flawless, especially when your stressed and sleep deprived. We rooted for you from episode 1. I will say that I wish people that had power would have gotten Frank out sooner. All of his blinking and hand gestures made him unwatchable.. To me anyways.. As far as your personal game I think your biggest mistake was made on day 1 when you took the hottest girls in the house as your teammates.. I’m sure the wife loved that.. Haha!! Joking!! I’m sure she trusts and believes in you and your motives.. Figure out a way to get on again. It was a fun season to watch..

    • Dan Gheesling

Hahahah Sammi, Chelsea was cool with my team. She liked them all. :)

    • Millie

Why do people always say that? Just because they’re hot girls they’re not good picks? Talk about stereotyping. Danielle and Kara were great picks! Sociable, smart and physical enough to win comps. Big strong guys get a target on their back quick. Do people actually think that if Dan had guys, that he still wouldn’t have lost a player in the first week? Of course he would have. Dan was just unlucky he only had 2 picks and not three, but Jodi was no big loss anyway. Dan and Danielle were a great team, look at how much adversity they conquered. The funeral was epic, and Dan couldn’t have pulled that off with any other player. He picked the best people to work with and for him.

      • Dan Gheesling

D & K were really good picks in my opinion!

      • Sammi

For the record.. I was only teasing about choosing the girls as teammates because they were gorgeous sweet girls and he had a wife (fiance’ at the time??) watching from home.. Not talking down on thier game play.. The comment was totally only meant as a joke. I’m a wife and secure in my marriage and would have had the same view on it as I’m sure Chelsea had. But it was a joke that floated around the house when we watched..

  • http://gaylab1@juno.com Gayla Benton

Enjoyed watching you on BB again Dan, You and Brit were our Favorites. Merry Christmas to you and Chelsea .

  • lauren

great photo of jen for this blog-glad to see you can laugh these things off-i know i’d be overanalyzing them for years. i think you played the smoothie conversation off pretty well and thats why franks DR’s weren’t shown, the mist lives on.

  • Carl

Kara was a terrible player. Everyone wants to forget that because she’s so nice and pretty, but all she did when she was on the block was whine, pout and cry, and Dan and Danielle had to have all the strategic conversations on her behalf. Danielle is the opposite, some people don’t want to give her credit because they don’t like her, but she had probably the best social game of the season.

Dan, you had way bigger mistakes than those, come on now. The Joe and Frank missteps impacted nothing, nothing would have been different. On the other hand:

    – You shouldn’t have given Danielle your blessing to evict Janelle, that was a good move for her, but a terrible one for you. You needed her and boogie in the jury to vote for you over a newbie. She would have been a sure vote for you.

    – You shouldn’t have alligned with all the people who could beat you in the end and in competitions. You should have done whatever it took to take Jenn or Joe to the end. Only then could you have a shot at the money. Thinking you had any chance of beating Ian was your most inflated hubris moment.

3- Your final 2 jury speech was terrible, just transparent ass kissing.

You played the best second place game in BB history, i’ll give you that. If the objective of the game was getting to the end, it would have been the best game ever played on BB. But since the objective is getting at least 4 jury votes, it wasn’t a successful game. Finishing second is a pretty bad finish because it means you lost to the other person. Janelle finished third but she’s considered a great player because she would have won if she made it one step further, you know what I mean? Same with Dr Wil, who left in fourth but would have won if he made it to the F2. But coming in second means you had the opportunity and failed. Leaving before the final 2 because people know they can’t beat you is more complimentary than second place, then you’re just a goat, which you were – Ian and Danielle were confident they could beat you, that’s the main reason they were loyal to you and wanted to take you to the end. Danielle knew she couldn’t beat Shane or Ian. If she could have beat any of the three, obviously she would have taken Shane. Ian knew he had a better shot against you and liked the idea of beating a winner.

I’m not knocking you, your theatrics were very entertaining, I love watching players stabbing people dramatically, a la Russell Hantz, and you got a lot of fame and screen time because of it, it is a TV show and you made a name for yourself. But it’s not smart gameplay to WIN.

    • Dan Gheesling

Hey Carl – I completely understand where you are coming from. I felt like I had to change it up to have a shot at winning again because no one would let me play the same game twice.

As far as Janelle, at the time it would have been a really hard sell to keep her, so much so that I would have had to put my neck on the line again. I had no incentive to do that.

My speech was constrained by the time limit, I had a lot of explaining to do and not a lot of time to do it (through my own fault). I knew the time limit so I have no one to blame but myself. The first time I had an endless amount of time to speak to the jury, which helped me a ton.

I appreciate your gameplay analysis. My whole goal was to get to the Final 2 seat and bank on the fact that if I got there AGAIN as a winner, with a decent speech, I felt like I would have a good shot to win.

      • Amber

I agree with Carl that Kara didn’t fight to stay, and Danielle is underrated because she had the most alliances (quack pack, silent six, and three people who wanted to take her to F2 in Jenn, Shane and Britney). So yes, she was good socially, but strategically, she was awful – way too emotional and too attached to Dan and Shane. Britney told her all the time it had to be two girls at the end to win, but she was all about “her boys” *eye roll* Using the veto on Dan was so dumb that a part of me wonders if it crossed her mind that Dan might evict Shane, and she just thought “If Dan evicts him, at least I won’t have to”. I wouldn’t put it past her tbh. There’s no excuse to throw the first part of the final HoH, none, but i’m sure she regrets that enough. Girl gets enough unwarranted hate, so I don’t want to add to it.

About Dan though, there’s nothing he could have done to save Janelle, everyone wanted her gone except Dan, Britney and Joe. Janelle was sloppy and made a lot of enemies this season, quite disappointing. As for Dan alligning with strong players, what was he supposed to do? If he alligned with Jenn and Joe instead of Shane, Ian… he would have been evicted a lot sooner. Joe and Jenn ceetainly weren’t winning anything to keep him safe, he had to make deals with people who could win comps. As for the jury speech, like Dan said, there just wasn’t enough time to make his case, and I disagree that it was just a second place game, you never know what the jury will base the voting on, they could have realized how hard it was for him to get to the end. And obviously second place is better than 3rd or 4th place – 50k better! Am I right Dan? ;)

        • Dan Gheesling

          You’re right. ;)

        • ayen robles

          absolutely!

    • Big Brother fan

      Carl:

Dan’s hands were tied when came to evicting Janelle. If he fought to hard to keep her…a target would’ve been on his back. Yet it again, he could’ve used Janelle as a shield: the house would’ve her out because of ability to win comps.

    • ayen robles

hahahaha… 3rd or 4th place better than 2nd?!… when?!# how?!@#% where?!@#$% who would have thought it?… well, you’re entitled to your own opinion… love janelle though… for me Dan is the best bb game player of all time ;)

  • Karrun

I can’t believe I forgot about that conversation. It was funny! But yeah, you could have easily saw everything that Joe had in mind.

Anyways, I think your biggest mistake was the Kara thing because she could have easily been your Memphis if she were to not showmance with Shane. What to learn from this is that those who don’t have some sort of good relationship with the HoH in Week 1 are more likely to be nominated. If you recall from Season 6, Kaysar and Andrea (Janelle’s secret ally) were nominated mainly because of that reasoning.

Overall, your game was great. Too bad no jury member watched Season 2. If they all had watched it, they probably would have respected you a whole lot better.

  • Garrett

I know Britney was a big threat in this game, but I wish you would have convinced Frank to put someone else up. I would have loved to see you two work together until the end.

    • Lloyd

Unfortunately, it had to Britney for it to work. Ian had the veto ball, and it couldn’t be Shane because then Danielle wouldn’t have told Jenn to use the veto. Those three were the only options for Frank to break up the quack pack and work with Dan/ielle and Jenn.

It sucked to see Brit go, but strategically, I appreciated the move.

  • Nance

I bought the kindle addition of your book and loved it.
You are the best player ever and you were a genius
In the art of manipulation. Does Danielle forgive you?

    • Dan Gheesling

Thanks so much Nance, I appreciate that. LOL. :)

  • Christian

    Dan,
Me and my cousins have a few funny sayings that we always repeat randomly for laughs…. “this is Dan” is now one of those….it was hilarious!

    • Dan Gheesling

      :)

  • Keith

I got to say your biggest mistake was keeping Ian in the game at Final 4. Shane would have voted out Ian and I believe Ian would have voted for you in the jury. I understand you knew Shane would have taken Danielle to the Final 2, but don’t you think you could have beaten Shane in the last part of the HOH and then take Danielle to the Final 2. I didn’t see Danielle beating either you or Shane in the first 2 parts of HOH (endurance or climbing the wall). Was locking up Final 2 more important than giving yourself a higher % chance of winning in Final 2? Thanks in advance Dan.

  • Lazzi

Thanks to you BB was the best season ever. Period.

Now… what *if* … you had kept Brit instead of Danielle? Did you ever consider it? You must have known the next HOH comp would favor a Brit or Ian win (he won) – You could have convinced Frank it was a good thing to break the Dani/Shane couple. Shane would have been easier to get rid of and having Brit as a potential F2 instead of Danielle was a better bet to win the game (but then again Danielle&Shane early on in the Jury House not sure how their votes would have been against a Dan/Brit F2 but sure votes ag. Ian/Joe/Jenn)

    • Dan Gheesling

Never, Brit was too good and was covered by everyone. It was never an option. :)

      • Lazzi

OK ~ Let’s say you won the Veto and saved yourself, who would you have pitched to Frank to be the replacement?

  • http://Twitter.com/JenNitch5053 Jennifer

I am SO glad that “Not Extending the Conversation” was included in this list. That had to be one of the FUNNIEST moments in Big Brother history. I died laughing at Joe’s “Wasssup…” after you told him it was you. So freaking hilarious that I had to watch it over a few times live and then again while reading this blog.
Love your blogs Dan and I LOVE how you try your hardest to write people/fans back on Twitter, Facebook, your blog, etc.
    Thanks for being you!

    • Dan Gheesling

Thanks for all the support Jenn! I appreciate it. :)

  • Tara Pittsley

Lol I remember watching the Joe moment and the smoothie moment live on the feeds and thinking “OMG!!” Lol the Joe slip-up was probably the funniest moment this season! You totally made this season for me, you’ve been my favorite since your original season! I purchased the feeds early, not knowing you’d be on this season and was extremely thrilled when you were! I’m extremely grateful you did this season because without you I think it would’ve been pretty boring! You made it exciting and fun for the live feeders! Thank you Dan and great job! :)

  • Alex

    Hey Dan,

Each and everyone of these clips are at the top of my favorite Big Brother 14 moments. If you didn’t know, I busted your B@lls pretty hard with my tweet on Kevin’s WTF show because you admitted to never washing your lucky swim shorts. hahahaha! You are awesome Dan! Thanks for making BB 14 an amazing season!

  • Mikey La France

“…But I really wanted that smoothie.” HA HAH. Your whole demeanor during that conversation was so funny.
This was a really great analysis, Dan. Thanks, again. :)
I can’t wait to see the next posts!

  • Katrina

That Joe moment was so funny!! I laughed so hard. I still laugh when I think about it! It’d have been really amusing to see that continue!!

  • Jake

Im 14 years old Dan. Im a pretty big fan of yours. But I think I can play the game, just a bit better. So, for now. I’ll be a Renegade with you. ;)

    • Dan Gheesling

Thanks for the compliment Jake! Welcome to the Renegades buddy!

  • Katie (ObsessedwithBB)

Ahh, so good. I remember watching that Joe incident on the feeds and I just knew it would make the show. Even if he found out it was Dan half way through the conversation, it wouldn’t matter; he was going home that week! So it would have been funny even if he did find out. :)

  • Katie (ObsessedwithBB)

Oh, also, when I first saw this I was like, WHAT? This must be a mistake. Dan doesn’t make mistakes!LOL

  • Kiersten

Hey, Dan. Just wanted to say that I’m a huge fan, and how you’ll always be considered as one of the best. I enjoyed watching you in both BB10 and BB14, and can’t wait to hear more about you! Good luck with everything. :)

    • Dan Gheesling

      Thanks so much Kiersten! :)

  • Kate

Good calls Dan. I agree with underestimating the jury. Although, I think this group banded together and voted bitterly so I’m not sure what you could’ve done differently. Sure maybe you could’ve kissed some of their butts before leaving but you had to send them all packing to advance yourself. That’s the whole point of the game! Anyways, you rule. Best wishes.

  • kyle

Although I wanted Boogie or Frank to win…

Dan, you were by far the best player in that game. You would have never lost, if you didn’t screw over the jury!
    Congrats!

  • Donnie

I don’t even know how you sleep in that house period! I’d be too worried about people talking late-night game play!
Either way, so proud that you got runner up! I’m near Dearborn, so it’s amazing to see such a mastermind come from our area! I couldn’t even put it into words to be honest with you! I was even at Ford Field for my high school team the night your team went to state finals as well, I wish I could have met you had I known you guys were playing that night as well!

  • Jo

    Hey Dan,
My husband and I watched the “Joe Wassup” segment as it happened on the feeds and laughed so hard at the time. We were saying to each other “did that just happen?” Too funny! You made BB14 awesome for us, thanks. Also I’m enjoying “Punch It In”, it’s a very positive experience.

    • Dan Gheesling

Awesome Jo! Thanks so much for the support. What has been your favorite part of Punch It In so far?

  • Lori

may I offer another possible mistake? You can rank this as high or low as you want.

*not winning final HOH & taking Dani to F2. I still think, had you done this, your jury speech was all but written. You could’ve played the “coach” card & said you accomplished your first goal (taking your player to the end) & your second goal once the game was reset (getting yourself to the end).

I know the jury have said you wouldn’t have won regardless who you were up against (except Willie, of course), but with this strategy, they would’ve had a tough job of justifying not voting for you.

Anyway, you still won #BB14 in my book. Ian’s name deserves an asterisk next to it on wikipedia. #justsaying :)

    • Tara

I completely agree. Had he taken Danielle…no speech nesessary. It would have also made it a whole lot easier for him to play future Big Brothers as he would have been considered loyal-to-the-end type. Which seemed like he was until paranoia set in. (In part due to production wanting to keep Ian in…I think) I bet they were asking Dan alot of questions about Danielle and Shane….which made him overthink.

      • Bo070

I agree too. I was disappointed that Dan/Danielle weren’t the final 2. I give kudos to Ian for playing the end game perfectly and getting the W though. Up until then, Dan and even Danielle were better players than Ian, in my opinion. However, Ian stepped up at the right time, so I can’t say his victory is undeserved. But Dan/Danielle at the end would have cool because it would have validated the coaches twist, besides they had a great journey from almost being out week 2, to completely controling the house (between the two of them they had everyone covered). Really hope to see them be friends again, it’s almost Christmas after all, a time for forgiveness, and the game has been over for long enough that she might be past any ill feelings towards Dan.

  • Paula

Dan, I think the fact that you were a previous winner, worked against you. Plus, Ian was well liked. I thought early on in the season, that if you wanted a chance to win, you had to be in the finals with Mike Boogy. Mike was not well liked and I think you would of won.

  • Vivian

Hey Dan!! …. here’s my 1 cents worth:
#4 : When talking with Frank, I thought that you should have Really played up Shane and Danielle voting for Frank to stay and Joe to go! – Frank had deals with Shane too, and that would have taken some pressure off of you when Frank was evicted!

#Ian throwing the challenge : I know you were shocked that Ian agreed to throw part 1 … but Ian was all but out the door and You Saved him. I think you should have asked for More from him. You should have told him that he had to throw parts 1 AND 2 … and that you (or Dani) would take him to final 2!

Nevertheless, Aweson game and YOU made my summer! – Dan You ran that house – but you were so subtle at it .. no one really realized it – Not even You! … For you to make final 2 with ALL odds against you : YOU WON! .. there is no accounting for bitter and in a sense, Ignorant jurors!

  • Bridget

Dan-LOL! That clip with Joe was great, especially the first time around. Yeah, I agree, you should’ve kept that going, could’ve gotten some vital info. from him. Personally, I said your biggest mistake was miscalculation on the jury. I was going nuts willing you to open your eyes! REALLY wanted you to win this thing, but I have to say that out of anyone else I’m glad it was Ian if you weren’t ment to have it. He plays on a level like you and Dr. Will, and respects the game like you both do. I go back and forth, what if you would’ve taken Danielle? Middle America would’ve been pissed because they loooved “little Ian the super fan” and hated Danielle, jury didn’t like Danielle because of her loyalty to you, or didn’t have respect. Would the outcome have been different? Taking your own player? I guess we’ll never know, and everything happens for a reason I guess. Thanks for giving us all of your insight on the game. You FOR SURE made the season 100%! Dan fan till the end!

    • Lilianne

Huh? You don’t speak for “Middle America”. I live in “Middle America” and I never hated her and people I talked to who watched BB didn’t either. Why would they? She had a good edit and the reason for that is because she was mostly a nice person. The edits don’t get too complex, there’s not enough show time to show all the facets of everyone’s personality, so only the main traits are highlighted. If she really was that bad production would have made her a villain. She’s not as hated as the internet makes it seem, her haters are just beyond loud and obssessive, but I think it’s a very loud minority. She’s actually pretty popular, I mean, she has a lot of folowers on twitter for a first time player, I think in the top 3 this season (not counting coaches obvi).

Dan, you didn’t mention a big one! When you told Boogie that Frank would have been evicted after the reset. If not for that, you would have been able to play with Boogie, and Frank wouldn’t have been out to get you. You just blurted it out, what were you thinking?

      • Dan Gheesling

I was trying to build some trust with Boogie. :)

If you loved Danielle, you obviously never watched the feeds. That’s all I’m saying.

  • http://www.Dollysdaughter.wordpress.com Colleen Kelly

I remember Joe ‘s “Hey…. wassssssup?.” The look… on his face…. was classic!. I happened to see that moment. I thought you might keep it going, but don’t kick yourself, in a moment like that you are so surprised.. and human, it’s OK, and who is thinking 24/7?

That conversation with Frank. Holy cow, I was thinking how is he going to do this.. I felt SO uncomfortable for you because Frank was staring a hole… right through you…. looking for ANY sign of what you were thinking. You did a good job though . Glad you didn’t turn red or something! haha
You just tweeted about “The Truman Show” Love that movie. Everyone here doesn’t get why..LOL I never thought about the Big Brother connection.. Yea gee! lol ;)

I know you hear it from friends and family but I am truly so proud of you. A book Dan. Wow. OMG, I have to go see it in our local Barnes and Noble! That, will be Epic!
Loved the post. I always do.
Watching people tweet you.. Gosh you have so much support, it makes me smile!!!. :)
    Coll :)

  • Kelly

“Eagle Eye” Joe was always watching everyone!!!!!

I really thought you had it in the bag!!! Especially since Britney was able to let it go so easily, I expected everyone would be able to also and vote based on the BEST game play.

Glad you made it to the end though!! :)

  • Charles

Dan do you wish you had won the final Hoh…would you have taken Ian or would you have taken Danielle. If you had taken Danielle do you think you would of won the game against her

  • http://facebook.com/jamesgearns Jamie Gearns

    Dan,

This list was funny…. especially your #1. The first time I watched Big Brother..was your first season, so I’ve been watching that long(don’t know off hand how long that is???..). This was far and away, the most entertaining of ALL seasons that I have watched. You really took game play to a whole new level for the viewer, and it made for some great television. (at least the way it was edited…). After not wanting a veteran to win, at first, the shenanigans you pulled off to get to the end, was nothing short of brilliant, and it was EASY to root for you. Unfortunately, bitterness won out..(and Ian did too..thinking back). Maybe a different outcome with you and Danielle sitting at the end? I don’t know…they were all pretty mad at you. Anyway..thanks man. It’s a really cool show..when people play like you did. Thanks for playing….I hope you get to do it again. jamie

    • Dan Gheesling

Thanks Jamie! I appreciate it. :)

  • http://facebook.com/jamesgearns Jamie Gearns

Joe would’ve been ‘giving you the business’ in that conversation…in ‘your best shane voice’.

  • Alexandra

I was just wondering what you thought about watching the episode when Shane was evicted. While you were on the show you assumed Shane heard you wisper To him “she’s been playing you, ask Jenn”. as you know now shane wasnt even listening to what uoi said. do you think that that mix up was a mistake in your game? I don’t think it would have really made a big difference but if Jenn was to tell Shane that Danielle had been in a final three with her and you, maybe he would have doubted Danielle more because she hadnt told him that during the game. Also if we didn’t buy the commentary, can we still buy it? Also is there a place where I can watch back that one episode that you watched live online on spreecast? Maybe ?

    • Skye

You can watch all the episodes on You Tube. Just type in BB 14 Ep1 pt1 from there you can the whole season. By The way Dan AWESOME season !!

  • Bayli

I know you didn’t want to take the risk, but I thought/wished you were going to let Ian break the tie to vote out Frank the whole time. The cards fell into your lap perfectly — Ian actually wanted to do it because he wanted the blood on his hands, and Danielle and Shane were okay with it. If you did this, you could have acted shocked and told Frank on his way out that you had no idea Danielle was going to vote him out. This would have earned you at least Frank’s vote in the jury, if not Ashley’s as well — and mob mentality may have gone your way, who knows!

  • Alex

What about throwing the first coaches competition? You knew you would win but purposefully let Boogie catch up to you and let him win. I thought that was a terrible move since you only had 2 players left and you could have saved one of them, but I could understand that your other player would then be a target.

  • Daniel Sherriff

    Dan,

I thought you played a hell of a game. I was so pumped when I heard you were coming back to play this season. BB10 was the first full season I ever watched and I enjoyed every moment of it! Seeing you dodge bullets and rise from the ashes was truly awesome for me to see. I was rooting for since day 1.

Your game this season was truly spectacular. I agree there was not a whole lot you could have done to keep Janelle, especially after the coaches meeting where Boogie laid it all on the line and Janelle was speechless, clearly showing she was lying. Had you still been on the ‘get rid of Frank’ team, you probably would have lost a ton of trust with the Quack Pack.

I do wonder one thing. Obviously if you picked Danielle first and Kara second, Danielle would have been on the block that first week because she was your #1 pick. Do you think Danielle would have had a better chance to stay than Kara if Danielle was up against Frank? Also, had it been you and Kara instead of you and Danielle, do you think you could’ve gotten away with the tricks you pulled on Danielle with Kara. Kara seemed a little more stable in the game and I wonder had you pulled the stunt on her at the funeral, would she have stuck with you or figured that you couldn’t be trusted and cut the cord with you. What is your opinion?

  • Jeremy

I thought that you should have let Ian vote out Frank as the tiebreaker, so therefore Frank couldn’t have been bitter at you because you kept your word and didn’t vote for him. Ian was totally down with getting out Frank, because of how mad he was about Brittany.

    • Amber

I AGREE!! That was about all Frank talked about in the jury house. If it had been Ian that had the “blood on his hands” I think things may have been different..BUT I also think that its easier to know what to do after the fact lol

  • Amber

I think another thing that upset the houseguest was the POV (finding coins for the machine episode. First let me just say that everything you did I was rooting for you because you have always been my favorite player. But when you went in the room to try the coin in the game and you slammed the door in Brits face I believe..that started some issues..what do you think?

  • Maureen

I was shocked at the true bitterness of this particular jury. I was really bummed that it was a 7-0 vote. You deserved more than that. I think you played an awesome game. You had some big shoes to fill (your own) having been a former winner. I thought Ian played a good game, but he pretty much played the game however you told him to. Wish you won!

    • Joan

It was a 6-1 vote. Danielle voted for Dan.

  • Charlene

Hi Dan :) Just wanted to add my name to the list of people who have thanked you for make BB14 so enjoyable. You were my #1 choice from day one based on your play in BB10. I watched the live feeds religiously this year and gained a lot of insight into your game play. It definitely made the season more fun for me. I’ve enjoyed reading your blog and will definitely order a book or two before Christmas. Say hi to Chelsea for me. I admire her great personality and willingness to share you with us all. I ordered some “Dan’s Mist” candles from MichiganScents.com as Christmas gifts. My family and friends will truly get a kick out of such a unique present. Thanks again, Dan. I TRULY hope to see you on a future BB season. All Stars for sure !!

  • Debi

Since you played twice, one once, almost won again…you should writ a follow up book how to STAY in the Big Brother house. Nobody can write that book but you! PS: how much is the stipend and how long do you have to wait for your check?

  • Colin R.

    Hey Dan,

Don’t know if you remember me but I have chatted with you a couple times on spreecast. I am your number one supporter and I am the guy from Newfoundland.. Just wanted to say I think you played a phenomenal game this season, and I hope that when I get in the Big Brother Canada house someday (It IS going to happen), I can play half as good as you.
I think I speak for all of your supporters when I say we are so thankful how cool and amazing you are to take the time out of your busy schedule to write to us, and speak with us on twitter and spreecast.
I share your passion for Big Brother, and I would do absolutely anything to play the game.. I love the strategy and the mind games so it has honestly felt like a dream talking with you those couple times, so again I just want to thank you for taking the time to talk to me!
I can’t wait until your book comes out in stores in Canada, I will 1000% be buying my copy and hopefully I can apply some of your tips to help me get on next years Big Brother Canada!!

    Thanks Dan,

    Colin

  • Peachariffic

I think the two serious mistakes you made were 1) the smarmy speech to the jury and 2) the way you handled yourself at the POV machine-coin challenge. The POV challenge alerted the other players to the fact that you were maybe more invested in this game personally than you let on, and you also acted rudely a couple of times in the course of the action.
In the end, I’m not sure anything you did would have changed the outcome for the good. I think most other changes in your strategies would have made you leave sooner.
As much as I love Janelle and was completely distraught when she was eliminated so early, I don’t think her staying would have done you any good.
I’m also a little surprised Brit didn’t at least throw you a vote. Out of all the players on the jury, I thought she would have understood what you went through and how you deserved the recognition.
I completely think you should have won, but I’m glad Ian is the one who did, out of all the rest of the players.
Thanks so much for this continued communication with fans. It helps ease the pain of BB withdrawals.

PS Will you be watching the new BB Canada?? :)

    • Dan Gheesling

Can’t say I disagree with you, although the outcome most likely would not have changed. ;)

I’d love to watch BB Canada, hoping I can get SliceTV in the USA.

    • Kim

You’re completely right. Once that coin comp went down, the players all knew what they had secretly suspected…that Dan was out for himslef!

  • http://www.santiagotimestake2.com Britney Santiago

    Dan,
I agree with all 4….but actually the best moment (besides the Funeral) was when Joe thought you were Shane… we rewatched that soooo many times dying laughing. Your reaction was the most hysterical part, “Its not Shane, Joe. Its Dan. Go to sleep Joe.” LOL! Ahhhhh he had to feel so embarrassed knowing that would for sure get airtime! It might have been a mistake overall, but it was comedic genious at the same time. -Britney :)

  • Will

Dan, I gotta admit I wasn’t a big fan of you in BB14 after you plotted Britney’s demise, but HEYYYY I gotta hand it to you, that was a great move and I believe you will go down in history as THE BEST player…even better than Dr. Will

  • Anne

Dan, you are the greatest player in Big Brother History..a complete mastermind! You always stayed about 10 steps ahead of everyone. Absolutely amazing, and super entertaining to watch! I won’t enjoy BB 15 half as much without you in it!

    • Dan Gheesling

Thanks so much Anne, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully you will stick around the blog to keep in touch! :)

  • Kay

Are u happy and proud of ur self with the way u played or ……..?
Well try to reply all the comments I think it is important……cheers

    • Dan Gheesling

      Yep!

  • Kim

    Dan,

You were the one player that I hated to love! Your passion and knowledge about the game is incredible! I think the single biggest mistake in the game was to water the seed that Boogie planted, and that was to back door Janelle on Week 4 (??) On another note, did Ian ever forgive and forget? That poor guy looked like a deer in headlights on the finale :) I wish you both well and really enjoyed how the game was played this season. Any theories on the twist this summer??

  • Dan ATX

BB15 has me reflecting back on your great game play both in your original season and in BB14. Both times the odds were stacked against you, but in completely different ways. That’s important because it dictated how you had to play the game in BB14. Your survival to the end was almost miraculous.

Anyway…one of the most compelling stages of the game (in addition to your “funeral”) was when you chose to protect the identity of Ian as informant and ally even though it put you in grave danger of eviction and brought countless undeserved snarky comments your way. It was a shining moment and earned you much favor in the game, but I was also surprised in the end game that you didn’t use it against Ian. It seems as though everyone would have no choice but to see how you carried Ian throughout the game. At that point he could have been shot down so easily. You took the fall. But at the same time, I respected that so much for that. It seemed to show how much you genuinely enjoyed Ian and were consciously choosing to encourage him in the game. I can’t help but wonder how much Ian realizes that after the fact.

All your comments here are so interesting. Twice now you have been that extremely rare BB player who is just riveting in your approach to both the game and how you interact socially with other players within the game. Much of that social interacton seems so raw and real.

Best to you and yours Dan and thanks for all the great BB memories!

  • Trevor

Do you think picking players was a mistake? Do you regret not picking Frank, Shane, or Ian? And do you think evicting Jodi was a mistake? She seemed like a very social person.

Dan, I watched you play bb10 and bb14 and I admire how wise you played them. I also think it’s wise of you to reflect on it, you might go for round 3, you never know! You are awesome!

  • Chris

Dan, I just finished watching season 14 and im extremely disappointed at how the jury voted. Some of the things you pulled off where just amazing. Seeing you get robbed of your well earned win because of a butthurt jury was terrible. Did any of the jury member’s ever tell you sorry after the show?

  • katie

im really late on this one but i have to ask just in case… why in the world did you not get ian out instead of shane? what was the rational? i couldnt see you winning over anyone but maybe jenn as far as the last 5 went and POSSIBLY danielle but definitely shane (imo. i dont understand why you or anyone thought they had a chance in hell of winning against ian. ill be honest, you are one of my least favorite big brother players, but youre fun to watch and definitely GOOD at the game, but that just threw me for a loop. do you think that was a mistake as well or in retrospect do you think as far as the jury went there would be no way to win against any of them?

  • Hannah

Unfortunately, I found this post late but I really think your game surpassed Ian’s in many aspects except in getting jury votes ;)
I wanted you to go 2-for-2!

The Joe moment was great though, almost as funny as the hugging Jesse moment in BB10.

  • MOB

I think the reason Dan didn’t win was cause almost all of the jury members were people that were backstabbed by Dan. Dan played the best game BB has ever seen, and the jurers were all just jealous and let their emotions take control of their judgements. You were robbed Dan, and I really hope every single person in the jury seat never gets to play the game again, cuz they’re all a bunch of pu$$ies!!!!!

  • Colby

Is there any advice or tips on how to play the strategic side of in Big Brother and in life you can offer Dan?

  • whteshark

Just finished watching Season 14 of Big Brother and I was mad. I’m a late comer to this show but Dan’s play was the best I have seen so far.

Ian played a good game; Dan played a brilliant game.

It was a travesty he didn’t win because of a bitter jury.

    • downtown punk

Just finished watching too! I already knew who the winner was before I started watching, and it made it even worse watching Dan playing this amazing game, making all the strategic moves and knowing that he is not going to win.
Absolutely agree about the bitter jury but can’t really blame them, because they didn’t have a chance to see the game from the outside perspective. If only Janelle made her comment before they casted their votes, ugh…
Also, had a huge facepalm whenever someone mentioned swearing on the bible thing. Honestly?!! It’s Big Brother, not a church. Swearing doesn’t mean anything there, all you gotta do is save your own butt and send each one of them people packing. Otherwise, it just wouldn’t be so entertaining!
The biggest thing I’m disappointed in is how nobody talked about the fact that Dan was playing the game for the second time, after already winning once. There was a HUGE target on his back from the day coaches pushed that button. He couldn’t play the same safe game he had already played, it just wouldn’t work, IMO.
All in all, I feel like Dan deserved to win BB 14 100%, he made that season for me and for many other viewers I’m sure. If there was a viewer’s vote, he would’ve won.
I know it’s been almost 3 years, but I just finished watching it, so my emotions are fresh :D
p.s. Still laughing at Joe mistaking Dan for Shane, I would’ve died of embarrassment lol Love Chef Joe tho, his DR sessions were the best.

  • Alex Johnson

Dan you never cease to amaze me! I watched BB10 for the first time about a month ago and managed to cram it all into a couple days. I just simply could not get enough of watching you play big brother! Of course seeing you play BB10 enticed me to watch how your game play differed in season 14. I just finished watching the final episode and I’ve got to hand it to you, you amazed me! It was definitely a tough call when it came down to the final vote (because of the grudges many of the jury members held against you) and I do feel that you were robbed, but despite all that you are still the only player of big brother to receive a unanimous vote in the finals and for that I commend you. To me, you will always be the greatest big brother player of all time!

  • Ashaus

Sadly, I was hoping you “swearing on the bible” and then flat out lying about it would have been your BIGGEST mistake. But I guess all your Christian beliefs go out the door when it comes to Big Brother? Wow! We loved you in Season 10. You sold your soul in Season 14 but I guess that’s what money can do to a person. So disappointing.

    • LegendLength

Pretty sure the swearing on the Bible was in regard to the information that Ian was working with the Quack Pack, not that he would keep Frank to the end.

  • LegendLength

I’m sure you know in your heart that you were simply robbed by a bitter jury. To quote Julie at the very start of episode 22:

“The New York Post is calling Dan the best Big Brother player of all time.”

“Entertainment Weekly is likening his epic hail mary to watching Paul Newman in The Sting or George Clooney in Oceans 11″.

Not to mention the many times house guests said they don’t want to take you to the end because you would beat them easily.

I know the game is about trying to get votes from the Jury regardless of how bitter they are. I agree with that logic. But at the same time there is such a thing a bitter jury. A jury who refuses to look at game moves and instead votes for a player that hurt their feelings the least.

The only criticism I would have of your play is when you were unfriendly during the Pandora’s Box / colored ball competition. The rest was near perfect.

  • Brandon Wade

Wasn’t the vote 6-1? Danielle was at least not too bitter to vote for the best player.
