About three to four days a week I enjoy going for a run to stay in shape.

Ok, I’m lying about the “enjoying” it part, but it is necessary to stay somewhat fit.

Every time I go for a run I end up in some form of auto-pilot.

My mind will turn off while listening to music or a podcast and I’ll run at an average steady pace.

Not thinking about how fast I’m going, nor do I really care, I just run.

I’m not motivated to run as fast as I can, but motivated enough to jog faster than a speed walk (for those running gurus out there my pace is between 8.30-9.00 minute miles), I end up running about 3 miles every time.

It ends up being a solid and adequate workout in the sense that I feel like something has been accomplished and I can reward myself accordingly.

Every run is almost identical, with no major changes, surges in pace, always lacking anything exciting…until last week.

Going For A Normal Everyday Run…

Last Thursday I went for a run just like normal…and something weird happened.

At the 8.30 mark I was right where I was supposed to be crossing a manhole cover that I call 1 Mile Marge. No big deal.

(You can get really creative when running the same 3-mile loop over and over again)

For the 2nd mile, I usually get into the swing of running for the day and my pace naturally will pick up. It’s probably because it‘s also the most public of miles on a main street, and I don’t want to look like a slug speed walking down a main road.

Regardless of what my motivation is for the 2nd mile, I always run it the fastest out of the entire 3 miles.

Which brings me to the dismal 3rd mile. The 3rd mile is always my worst mile, struggling to finish. It’s like once the 2nd Mile Marker is crossed, mentally I start to lose the battle and slow my pace down without thinking.

This ALWAYS happens on the 3rd mile…except for last Thursday. Something really strange happened.

As I broke past the 2nd mile marker and began the last mile of my run, a lady on a bike started pedaling past me as I slow jogged.

The lady looked like she was having the time of her life in her jean shorts as she passed me with ease…I was struggling just to keep my legs going.

She wasn’t even <del></del>pedaling hard!

She was on a leisurely stroll, but a slow pedal on a bike is faster than most people ‘s running pace.

As she passed me by, she looked over and grinned.

At the time, I couldn’t tell if it was a friendly grin, or a “why are you running so slow” grin.

What ensued there after was comical.

Not knowing where a sudden burst of energy would come from, I started sprinting as fast as I possibly could.

I ran past the lady as she was pedaling because I didn’t want her to pass me by again.

When I finally passed her, I looked back at HER and grinned…and then SHE started pedaling even faster.

Typically at this point in my 3-mile loop, I am struggling for air, and just want the run to end…but these normal physical deterrents were a non-factor in my race against jean shorts.

She tried catching me, and for about 20 strides, she did catch me.

It looked ridiculous. We were dead even, racing down a side street, a lady in jean shorts vs. me.

She was pedaling to the point where she was really giving her legs a workout and I was running as fast as I possibly could.

Right when I started to think she was put there just to challenge me something funny happened.

She just nodded to me, and drifted back to her normal pace, and I passed her by with ease.

Inside my mind, when she backed down, I celebrated my victory like a craze man over the jean short lady.

And then something significant hit me.

What I Learned From Battling Her

I couldn’t have cared less about losing the “race” to the old lady…OK I’m lying again. I did really want to beat her, but that’s not the point.

Racing the jean shorts lady down the side of the road made me realize that I have the capability to run like that every single time I run, so why don’t I?

And taking it a step even deeper (scary, I know), if being challenged like that in an insignificant run made me increase my effort to the max, how could I recreate that scenario in my daily life, more specifically in my businesses?

Having competition (whether real or not) really can push you to the next level.

I guess I never realized how powerful and important that has been in my life.

Setting goals, and figuring out how to achieve them are things that I’ve always been able to do somewhat naturally…but I wonder what can happen if competition can be tied to every goal/task/everyday thing that you do?

Challenging You To Challenge Me

As I start to figure out how to implement more competition into my business, blogging, coaching, etc., I will share what I come up with you…and I want to extend a challenge to you.

I really enjoy blogging, much like running, but I want to do more….

Somehow I want to add competition to better the blog…I don’t want to compete with another blogger, but I want to take a challenge from you.

Whether it is a content challenge, a posting more often challenge, or anything to do with adding posts to this blog, I’m challenging you to challenge me.

Leave a blogging challenge for me below in the comments and type in whatever challenge you come up with that strikes me like the jean shorts lady. I’ll accept a small handful of challenges and use it as my blog-competition.

There really is no criteria…get as creative as you want.

If I end up using your challenge, I’ll send you a free digital copy of my book Punch It In: 24 Days To Crossing Your Goal Line as a small thanks for pedaling faster than me…

Just leave your challenge in the comments below if you want to get involved in this post!

But for now, I want to thank bike riding jean shorts lady for helping me to understand how important competition can be, and also for being a gracious 2nd place winner in the insignificant run/bike race of 2013.

I also want to thank you for reading this post and invite you to join my mailing list!

Last week we had some fun on the Twitch.TV live stream with StarCraft 2 commentator and former pro-gamer Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham.

In the simplest terms, djWHEAT is like the Julie Chen of eSports (competitive video gaming). He announces a lot of major gaming events and is an avid gamer himself.

I met Marcus last October through a random chance tweet, and we’ve connected ever since (you can read about how we connected here).

Last week we dual-streamed Starcraft 2 on Twitch.TV (dual broad-casted).

Being a complete newbie in Starcraft 2 and djWHEAT being an expert, it made for an interesting stream.

There were times growing up when I’d get to stay up late as a kid playing games with my Dad, and then after having to go to bed, I would sneak out to see my Dad still playing Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link.

(If he got really far in the game without me, he would VHS tape it so I could watch it the next day, freaking awesome.)

There were times when my sister and I would get into an all out brawl because I “accidentally” attacked her in Balloon Fight.

There were times when extreme patience developed when setting up Doom Deathmatches with my Dad, and his friend from work through our LAN at home, connected to our phone modem.

(3 player Deathmatch fun in 1993, but connections dropped left and right)

There was a point in time in High School, when I looked to my best friend’s older brother who was 18 at the time (and didn’t play games anymore) and I would think to myself:

“When I’m his age, I hope I still play video games.”

And now…I’m well beyond 18, and I still love video games.

To non-gamers sometimes it is hard to explain why gaming provides so much joy and entertainment.

To me gaming is part nostalgia, challenge, escape, accomplishment, and competition all combined into one experience.

That’s just part of why I love gaming.

Gaming also helps me to keep in touch with my friends across the country as well as make new connections with people while live-streaming games.

Live streaming video games on Twitch brings a new level of interaction with a community that I’ve never experienced before.

Having the ability to share with others epic wins and getting trolled is hilarious no matter what game is being played.

Recently, I had a chance to talk with Jeff Burchett at Turtle Beach about live streaming and how I started gaming.

You can listen to that interview here:

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

It’s difficult to sum up all of the reasons why I love gaming, but I do know one thing.

It won’t matter what age I am, I always be gaming.

If you don’t already know about the gaming community around live streaming you can check it out here. I live stream every Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday at 8PM EST.

At first glance its a very twisted game, but it plays a lot like the old school NES classic Zelda.

The game is very difficult and is different every time you play it, which is why I have logged so many hours playing it!

You can find this game on Steam for anywhere from $5-$10. In terms of gaming dollars, I’ve gotten my money out of it 10x. It’s a blast to play.

I wanted to answer the most talked-about/controversial issues from the Finale and also share with you the live-streams I already recorded regarding my final thoughts.

Walking away from the Finale three things really stood out to me….

#1 – Jill “Deserved” the Win?

Any of the Final 3 players “deserved” to win.

They each earned their way to the end, whether it was through winning comps, scheming, or backstabbing.

Anyone who discredits Jill’s win is disrespectful to the game. People won’t remember the competition run she went on OR the fact she was NEVER nominated, which that alone is an incredible feat.

She played a game about winning comps and deception, and deserved to win.

#2 – What was the Jury thinking?

The biggest disappointment of the Finale was the Jury questioning.

The Jury had a LOT of time to think of intelligent game related questions that can impact who they vote for.

Instead the questioning turned into a self-aggrandizing showcase that had nothing to do with the game.

If you thought Gary played a better game, then just vote that way!

If the jury was filled with people who hadn’t seen the game before I can understand the bitterness, but there were “gamers” on the jury. As a fan of the GAME it wasn’t fun or entertaining to watch, it just made a mockery of the end game.

Side note: After meeting everyone on the jury, they are all great individuals. As people I really like them, but not their game on the jury.

#3 – The Vote

Sitting two feet away from the error vote, I couldn’t help but laugh. I almost thought I was in some sort of bizzaro world as it was going down.

Although it cost Gary the game, things like a messed up jury vote keep Reality TV interesting. No ONE could have ever predicted that, which is why we watch.

For the first time I really had a chance to see what the families go through during a Finale because I could see them in the audience.

When it comes to the game I don’t get emotional, however, sitting across from Gary’s Mom during that vote was tough to watch.

Same watching Emmett’s family when he got voted out.

When those big moves went down, I didn’t watch the TV screens, I just watched the families reactions.

It’s not easy to check your emotions at the door when you play the game, that’s why I respected a lot of what the Final 3 did in the game.

Emmett played the game with emotional control throughout which is NOT EASY to do, and is rarely ever done in Big Brother (and hasn’t been done in a LONG time).

Gary checked his emotion when he voted out Emmett, and showed that he is a gamer.

Jill kept her emotions in check staying composed when Emmett got booted.

Whether I like it or not, emotions and feelings will always get involved in the game.

It’s only when people can rise above it and control themselves to make tough decisions (backstabs) that make it a memorable season like this one.

Confused?

Basically, while a new episode of Big Brother Canada airs, I live stream commentary on your “2nd screen.” (Either a Laptop or iPad/Tablet).

It’s basically a cool way for us to watch live Big Brother episodes together and talk about what is going on during the commercial.

The commentary is just something that happened somewhat organically during a live stream – and has been sort of a test run to determine whether or not this is something I should continue doing during Big Brother USA this season.

Also next to the Live Stream video is also a chat feed that allows us to interact in the middle of the episode.

Still confused?

You can check out the past two commentaries I did for Episode 25 and 27 below (minus the chat).

After leaving my 24 hour stay in the Big Brother Canada house, one of the most frequently asked questions I received via Twitter was: “What are your impressions of the Houseguests?”

Since the episode has aired, I can now share with you my impressions of each Houseguest.

Spending 24 hours in person with each of the Houseguests at this late stage in the game, combined with their openness to talk about their strategy/position in the house, really gave me an insight to their games.

Andrew

Snarky and sarcastic are the best ways to describe Andrew. For being an elder-statesman and HUGE Big Brother Fan (he knew his BB trivia), I thought he would really be looking for any angle from me that I could provide to help his game.

I couldn’t have been more wrong!

It was the complete opposite.

He was not interested in really anything game-related I had to say, where it was to the point I felt like I was wasting my time talking strategy with him.

His Position: 3rd Wheel of an Alliance that put him up twice – AKA – in grave danger.

Where I Would Have Attempted to Coach Him To: 3rd Wheel with Gary & Talla, giving him a shot to compete out, with the option of Talla taking him if she wins a challenge.

What He Has To Do To Win: Pull off a miracle.

Bottom Line: I respect the fact that Andrew wanted to play his own game, but I think some pride got in the way of how he has played his game. He’s a good guy who’s funny to be around, he would have done well in the endgame, and probably could beat anyone in jury votes.

Chances of Winning:

1/5 Mist Cans – Miracle Needed

Talla

My first impression of Talla was intense, but hilarious. She has a lot of fight and contrary to what everyone thinks, she does have an OUTSIDE chance to win this game.

Talla was the first to come to me to ask for game-help, and she really wanted to work on her position in the game. She’s not in a terrible position in the game because she hasn’t done a lot. She hasn’t really ticked anyone off, or earned anyone’s respect game wise.

The latter can be changed.

If Talla comes up with a big win, or TWO big wins, she has an outside shot to win the whole thing.

Her Position: Hanging in a Final 3 or Final 4 position.

Where I Would Have Attempted to Coach Her To: Air tight with Gary, influencing him to string along Jill as well.

What She Has To Do To Win: Win AT least one comp and send Emmett home. If she wins two comps, sends Emmett home, AND takes Jill to the end, she could win the whole thing.

Chances of Winning:

2/5 Mist Cans – She has an outside shot!

Jill

My first impression of Jill was that she seems genuine and competitive.

Jill has what it takes to win Big Brother. She’s competitive, smart, has the ability to lie, and the stones to make a big move. The only issue is that some of Jill’s abilities have been dulled by Emmett.

She is in a position where she is so deep into a relationship with Emmett that the relationship has clouded her end vision to win the game, which is why I’m never a fan of showmances.

Jill gets a bad rap for lying in the game. It’s the curse of women who lie in Big Brother, it’s a double standard when compared to the men. Lying is part of the game, but for some reason, everyone always puts more heat on girls who lie, as opposed to guys who lie. It’s always been like that, unfortunately.

Her Position: In a great spot to get to the Final 2, but cannot win.*

Where I Would Have Attempted to Coach Her To: Take out Andrew this week and take a shot at Emmett next week.

What She Has To Do To Win: Jillian has to take out Emmett and sit next to Talla in the end (if Talla doesn’t make any moves) and then Jill can win.

Chances of Winning:

2/5 Mist Cans – The path is there for her to win, will she take it?

Gary

Gary is hilarious! He is goofy and over the top. Which helps him hide the fact he is a bit of a gamer, who has a ruthless side (plus!).

Gary has proven he’s willing to do what it takes to win, but he’s got a rough road ahead if he wants to, and is going to have to make a tough decision.

Gary was tuned in to most of our strategy talks, and that really surprised me. It was good to see how serious he took the game.

His Position: Fighting for his life, has to win a comp to get to the end.

Where I Would Have Attempted to Coach Him To: Work with Talla exclusively and add Jill as an outlier.

What He Has To Do To Win: Gary is going to have to fight his way to the Final 2, because anyone in their right mind wouldn’t take him. If Gary gets in against Talla or Jill, he has a great chance of winning.

Chances of Winning:

3/5 Mist Cans – If he stays away from Emmett, he can win it all.

Emmett

From the second I walked in the door, Emmett just sat back and took everything in. That is a rare quality in people who play Big Brother. He was very calculated in everything he said and did, and no one in the house seemed to pick up on that.

Emmett is always gaming, which I can relate to. I had a sense of Emmett always being concerned with where I was and who I was talking to at all times while I was in the house. He even mentioned this to me at one point.

The best way to describe Emmett’s game, is that he is very well insulated. A lot would have to go wrong for him not to make a run at winning the game.

Everyone wants to work with Emmett, and no one has taken a shot at him since Week 1, which is really hard for me to comprehend.

The thing I liked most about Emmett was the fact that he seemed to really enjoy playing the game ALL day long.

His Position: Best spot in the house, covered everywhere except for with Andrew in the end game.

Where I Would Have Attempted to Coach Him To: Get rid of Jill in the Final 2, and sit next to Talla, just in case.

What He Has To Do To Win: Emmett needs to be wary of someone taking a shot at him in the Final 4. The best way to avoid that is to win one comp next week. He wins this game easily against everyone except Gary (closer vote).

Chances of Winning

4/5 Mist Cans – There’s never a sure thing in Big Brother, but this game is Emmett’s to lose.

Final Thoughts on Everyone

As individuals, Andrew, Talla, Jill, Gary, and Emmett are all fun to be around. Everyone was really nice and I had a lot of fun hanging out with them, which is strange for this late stage of the game.

Each houseguest has a path to win the game, it will be interesting to see who is willing to make the tough decisions when the opportunity presents itself.

After spending 24 hours with them, I’m invested, and can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out.

A HUGE thank you goes out to both Sue Brophey and Erin Brock for rolling the dice and taking a chance on bringing me into the house.

Sue & Erin (plus their entire staff + Eric) were great to me the entire time I was there and were open to any of my crazy ideas in the house.

I’m excited to see them have long term success with multiple seasons of BBCAN.

I’m limited as to what I can talk about in regards to my opinion on the Houseguests…until the episode airs this Wednesday.

Because of this I’m inviting you to watch the Episode LIVE with me on Wednesday at 9PM EST on my Twitch.TV channel.

(Although I cannot endorse this. )

The live stream with start at 8PM EST with some gaming, then from 9-10PM EST we’ll be watching the episode together live.

Heading back into a Big Brother house is something I wasn’t sure I would ever do again.

When the opportunity to enter the Big Brother Canada house came up, of course I jumped at the chance, because it’s only for a short amount of time. Not another 75+ day grind-a-thon.

This time around heading back into Big Brother, I wanted to do something for #TeamMist.

As a Final Salute to #TeamMist on Big Brother, I came up with this contest below for us to interact with each other during the live feeds. You can also win some cool stuff.

You do need to have access to the Big Brother Canada Live Feeds to participate in this contest.

If you’re Canadian click here to access the feeds.

If you’re in the USA you’ll have to get creative to watch the Canadian Live Feeds.

Side note: Although this is my Final Big Brother salute, I’m still always around and interacting on the blog and even now on a 24/7 live stream cam from my house, as during the week for scheduled live-stream gaming on Twitch)

How To Enter
